SESAR PJ.22 WP3 and WP4: last deliverables submitted

Single European Sky ATM Research programme SESAR 2020 Wave 1 has reached high maturity and some projects are already about to complete their activities. The first finishing project Oro navigacija (as B4 consortium member) is involved into is PJ.22 SEabird - Validation and Demonstration Engineering.

Our company is Working Package 3 (Maintenance of the Platform Development Methodology) leader and we are very proud to have done, together with our partners ENAV, Leonardo, CIRA, Eurocontrol, Indra, Airbus and DSNA, the huge work to support other SESAR Projects on their Validation Platform Development.

The range of our activities was wide:

  • surveys,
  • consultations,
  • analysis of Availability Notes, Validation Plans, Reports and Platform Catalogue data,
  • mass and individual communication with the Projects,
  • elaboration of practical cases,
  • coordination with Eurocae Working Group 81,
  • definition of Platform Methodology and its updates (4 versions were submitted during the Wave 1!)
  • last, but not least, the Methodology Training accessed by 50 persons from 33 SESAR Solutions.

Oro navigacija has also contributed to all Working Package 4 (Communalization of validation tools and interoperability solutions) activities.

Now the last 3 contractual deliverables (Training Activities Report as well as final releases of Platform Development Methodology and Technical specifications document for communalized Validation Tools and Interoperability solutions) are already submitted for SJU review and we are looking forward to new challenges!


Platform Development Methodology Training: updated training content is already available

The SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) recommends all Platform developers as well as Solution/Exercise leaders to take part in V&VP, V&VI and Demonstration Platform Development Methodology Training. From January, 2019 the updated Training content is available to SESAR partners. The update’s snapshot:

   • New Module – The Methodology in a Nutshell. It overviews the available  Training content  and helps a trainee to understand  which points of the  content might be of his/her interest.  This Module gives a shortcut on what the Methodology actually is and gives a trainee the idea of the Methodology as of a flexible document which is easy to apply. It also explains  which Sections of the Training provide  a trainee with more detailed information  on the topics of interest.

   • Modules 2 and 3 are redesigned, split into smaller parts for an easier and more trainee-friendly training experience.

The Training is provided by PJ22 WP3 partners: Oro navigacija, Leonardo, Indra, Eurocontrol, Airbus, CIRA.

Oro navigacija and its partners Leonardo, Indra, Airbus, Eurocontrol and CIRA are pleased to announce that SESAR 2020 V&VP, V&VI and Demonstration Platform Development Methodology Training has started. 34 representatives of 8 SESAR ATM Solutions, Enabling and VLD projects are to take part in the first wave of distant training sessions (active from June 14 till July 6, 2018).

The Methodology Training is supposed to become a solid support to SESAR 2020 projects in their platform development activities. It aims at providing relevant guidance on how to apply the Methodology in practice. Provision of the Training is attributed to PJ22 WP3 (Working Package 3 „Maintenance of the Platform Development Methodology“ of PJ22 “Maintenance of the Platform Development methodology”) as contractual task in the framework of SESAR2020 Wave 1.

The Platform Methodology Training is provided as distant training session with pre-recorded material and interactive Q&A, assessment and feedback provision functionality.

The training session is broken down into of 3 modules:

  • - Introduction Module, containing quick overview of SESAR2020 Lifecycles, Platform development position in validation/demonstration process, analysis of SESAR 1 and SESAR 2020 differences, overview of practical issues;
  • - Methodology Application Guidance Module, containing Platform definition, introduction of Methodology’s key elements (Compliance Check List, Platform development artefact and their provision in the SE-DMF tool), ways of Methodology customization,  Methodology's added value in increasing process traceability and transparency);
  • - Special Capabilities Module, providing details on each Platform Development Check List step, experts’ from Oro navigacija, Indra, Leonardo, Airbus, Eurocontrol and CIRA explanations on various types of data to be  documented during the Platform development process, test case (PJ17-01-01 example) and demonstration of artefact production in SE-DMF tool.

The training is addressed to various audiences within SESAR 2020. For example, Module 3 (Special capabilities) is beneficial to Validation and Demonstration Exercise leaders and Platform developers, while Modules 1 and 2 are recommended to Project Managers and Solution Leaders. All participants of the training sessions can choose the Module of their interest. They can take part in all of them or, if preferred, only in selected ones.

The feedback received at the training will allow PJ22 WP3 to enrich the Platform Methodology and provide even better quality guidance to SESAR 2020 platform developers.

After July 6, 2018 the second Training wave will be announced and new training dates  will be provided. All SESAR 2020 projects are invited to take part.

Workgroup Lead by Oro navigacija will Provide Remote Training to Colleagues

The State Enterprise Oro navigacija and a workgroup under its leadership have worked out the Training Plan for Verification and Validation Platform Development Methodology. Thus, the second task of implementation of SESAR 2020 PJ22 project “Validation and Demonstration Engineering”, assigned to the workgroup, composed of representatives of Oro navigacija, Eurocontrol, the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), and the companies Leonardo, Indra, and Airbus, has been accomplished.

The Training Plan covers presentation of the training concept, definition of the target audiences, the envisaged structure, content and time schedule of training as well as preparatory tasks distributed among the project partners.

Currently, according to the Training Plan drawn up by the workgroup lead by SE Oro navigacija and approved by SESAR JU, the preparatory tasks for training are taking place: training material is under preparation, contacts of potential participants are being collected, and a technical tool enabling remote training is being tested.

Training is intended for the SESAR 2020 Programme project managers and leaders of technical solution workgroups as well as partners responsible for organising tests and testing and development of the Verification, Validation and Demonstration Platforms. For each of the above-mentioned audiences, training will be arranged in accordance with its respective demands.

The aim of training is to give an opportunity for programme members to understand better the major platform methodology aspects, to elaborate on how the methodology should be used, and to present practical examples and recommendations on how to organise the platform development process.

Training sessions will be conducted remotely. To the participants of training, pre-recorded video material will be presented, including clarifications of the methodology, recorded interviews with the workgroup’s experts exchanging their insights and experience in platform development. Training session participants will have possibility to submit, via electronic means, questions on platform development to organisers of training and give feedback on a training session. Questions will be answered after a training session. 

It has been foreseen to start training in March 2018. According to an individually agreed schedule, it will continue until June 2019. Duration of each training session will be 4 hours.

Oro navigacija participates in SESAR Programme as member of B4 Consortium which comprises air navigation service providers of Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. B4 Consortium takes part in 18 projects of SESAR 2020.


Oro navigacija Succeeds in Implementation of SESAR2020 Projects

The State Enterprise Oro navigacija together with the workgroup under its leadership have succeeded in overcoming the first challenge in implementation of SESAR2020 PJ22 project. On 30 June 2017 the Validation, Verification and Demonstration Platform Development Methodology developed by the workgroup was presented to the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU).

The methodology is one of the contract tasks of SESAR2020 PJ22 project. The Validation, Verification and Demonstration Platform Development Methodology has already been evaluated and approved by SJU and published in portals of STELLAR (SESAR2020 participant portal and the tool for project data management) and Horizon2020 (official portal of the research and innovation framework programme Horizon2020).

SE Oro navigacija is the leader of the PJ22 workgroup for the Maintenance of the Platform Development Methodology. The group of project executors includes representatives from Italy, Spain and France: the Italian Air Navigation Service Provider (ENAV), the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), manufacturers of aeronautical equipment Leonardo and Indra, aircraft manufacturer Airbus, and also representatives of Eurocontrol.

Having been developed by Oro navigacija in collaboration with its project partners, the methodology provides guidance on testing and validating solutions for SESAR ATM Solution and Enabling projects as well as Very Large Scale Demonstration projects. In the process of implementation of these SESAR2020 projects, new technological solutions are being developed as well as research and testing performed by using platforms which are recommended to be developed under the guidance of the Validation, Verification and Demonstration Platform Development Methodology.

Precise documentation of data is very important for the platform creation process. The workgroup lead by Oro navigacija has ensured that projects are supplied not only with methodology but also with technical tools for structured data documentation. This was implemented due to the SE-DMF data documentation tool developed by partners of PJ22 project. The tool has already been known to SESAR project partners, given that in conformity with the SESAR regulations, projects must put into it the data on the established technical requirements. Due to the efforts of workgroup WP3, new features have been installed into the tool: forms for data on platform development enabling consistent documentation of the platform creation process. The new functions help to reduce probability of errors, find data quickly, analyse them and notice interrelationships between various documents.

Development of the methodology and new functions of the tool create added value for implementation of SESAR2020 projects.

PJ.22 SEabird - Validation and Demonstration Engineering 

Project category – transversal (SESAR Solutions support)

SESAR Solutions and Very Large Scale Demonstration (VLD) projects are required to document properly their activities related to the Solution development. On one hand, it allows SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) to monitor programme progress, evaluate achievements, be sure that the projects act in line with defined requirements. On another hand, proper documentation is beneficial for the projects themselves as it ensures sound data management and allows to avoid the risk to diverge from the tasks. The list of mandatory documents as well as these documents’ templates are provided to SESAR Solutions. Among these documents are Operational Service and Environment Definition (OSED), Safety and Performance requirements (SPR), Technical Specifications (TS), Functional Requirement Document (FRD), Validation, Verification and Demonstration plans and reports (VALP/VALR, TVALP/TVALR, DEMOP/DEMOR), Availability Note (AN).

To ensure prompt data management by the SESAR Solutions, the project PJ.22 is to develop a modern and user-friendly document management tool. This tool is to enable the Solutions to generate required data in a single system, rather than in separate documents. Also, the tool allows to make necessary modifications and updates in easy and flexible way, to share document content to other partners, to link various project documents and to ensure their traceability. All these functionalities are implemented by PJ.22 in the System Engineering Data Management Framework tool (SE-DMF).

In SESAR 2020 framework, SESAR Solutions and VLDs are to perform validation, verification or demonstration exercises. To perform these exercises, Solutions needs to have Validation, Verification or Demonstration Platforms. Often these Platforms are of complex configuration and consist of components belonging to different Solution partners and/or located in different geographical sites. Therefore, PJ.22 is expected to support SESAR Solutions in their platform development activities - to provide Platform Development Methodology and to train the Solutions how to apply the Methodology in practice.

Validation exercise costs are significant. On another hand, many validation tools are already existing and could (with or without modifications) be re-used (separately or as platform components). SESAR supports the idea of the programme-wide tool communalisation, therefore, PJ.22 needs also to analyse tools availability within the programme, to define and communicate the list of the possible communalized tools and to define their technical specifications.

PJ.22 is consisted of 3 working packages: WP2 System Engineering Data Management, WP3 Maintenance of the Platform Development Methodology and WP4 Communalization of validation tools and interoperability solutions. Oro navigacija is WP3 leader and WP4 contributor.

PJ.22 is led by the Italy‘s air navigation service provider ENAV and involves these partners: Oro navigacija (Lithuania), Eurocontrol, aviation industry and technology companies Leonardo (Italy), Indra (Spain), Thales (France), Airbus (France), research institute CIRA (Italy).

Duration of PJ.22: from November 2016 to October 31, 2019. The Project will be considered completed after evaluation of results of defined tasks and approval of the Solutions‘ deliverables by the SJU.
