As the flight flows keep going down, the aviation sector sees a ray of hope in the vaccine entering the market as well as the intentions of the airlines to schedule more flights in December.
“Despite the expectation that the current situation in aviation sector will start improving as soon as the vaccine is widely used, the latest economic forecast of IATA reveals that in 2021 Europe is expected to be the worst-hit region worldwide in terms of airline losses (11.9 billion USD) and EBIT margin (expected decrease of 9.5 percent). According to the estimations, passenger traffic (measured in RPK – revenue, number of passengers and kilometres) is expected to have fallen by 70 percent this year, thus, the results of European region currently are the lowest, except for Africa and Middle East, the performance of which is still worse” stated the Chief Executive Officer of Oro Navigacija Marius Beliūnas.
In comparison to November of the last year the number of flights decreased by 54 percent and comprised almost 9 thousand flights, whereas the number of overflights decreased by 49 percent (reaching 7.3 thousand flights respectively).
During November most of the overflights across Lithuania were to the Russian Federation – air traffic controllers provided services to 2307 flights. The second place was taken by Germany with 1143 serviced flights and the third by China with 437 serviced flights.
“During the last month the biggest number of flights from Lithuania were to Riga (117 flights), Warsaw (70 flights) and London (69 flights)”, noticed M. Beliūnas while summarising the results of the serviced flights.
The most frequent users of Lithuanian airspace in November this year were the following airlines: Russian Aeroflot (516 flights), Russian Ural Airlines (447 flights) and Latvian Air Baltic, the aircraft of the latter having flown above Lithuania 424 times.
During the last month the biggest number of aircraft took off and landed at Vilnius Airport, namely, 1051 aircraft or 72 percent less than during the same period last year. Kaunas Airport provided services to 295 aircraft (60 percent less than during the last year), whereas Palanga Airport provided services to 106 aircraft (69 percent less than last year). Meanwhile the air traffic controllers of Šiauliai Airport provided services to 31 percent more aircraft than during November last year (218 aircraft in total).
The peak day of the month was the 12th of November. On that day 350 aircraft crossed the airspace of Lithuania.

In every country seeking to ensure that flights take place safely, efficiently and on time, aircraft are provided air navigation services from the moment the aircraft leaves the parking zone until it lands at the destination airport. State enterprise Oro Navigacija provides these services within the Lithuanian airspace and at Lithuanian airports.
The airlines pay route and terminal charges for using the airspace and the air navigation services provided within it. These charges comprise the reimbursement of the expenses incurred by the country, the airspace of which is used. Oro Navigacija covers its expenses from its main activity, i.e. delivery of air navigation services, entirely, and is not maintained from the state budget.
