The top five airlines, which executed the biggest amount of flights in Lithuanian airspace during the last year, remained the same. The airspace over our country was mostly used by Russian, Latvian, Finish, Irish and Hungarian airlines. Even the type of the aircraft which flew across the Lithuanian sky most frequently remained the same, it was mostly “Boeing 738”, three different types of “Airbus” as well as “Bombardier” model aircraft.
The biggest amount of flights across the Lithuanian airspace in 2019 were executed by Russian airlines “Aeroflot” (2056 flights or 5.3 percent more than during the previous year), Latvian airlines “Air Baltic” (1883 flights or 1.7 percent more in comparison to 2018), Finish airlines “Finnair” (1572 flights or 4.7 percent more), Irish company “Ryanair” (1217 flights or 8.7 percent more) and Hungarian airlines “Wizzair” (693 flights or 11.4 percent more).
During the last year the flight controllers in the Lithuanian airspace attended to 269.2 thousand of flights, i.e. 1.2 percent more than during the same period in 2018.
The majority of all the flights executed in the Lithuanian airspace (86.1 percent) were regular flights. Non-regular flights, the vast majority of which were charter flights, in 2019 comprised 9.4 percent of all the flights attended to in our country and reached the number of 25.3 thousand. General aviation flights, when the aircraft are used for leisure, tourism, aircraft rent and other purposes, without any schedule or destination arranged in advance, composed 1.8 percent of all the flights attended to in Lithuanian airspace during the last year, while their number reached 5 thousand. Last year the number of military flights reached 5.8 thousand and comprised 2.2 percent of all the flights attended to in Lithuanian airspace. Last year the number of executed flights falling under other categories, which were mostly training or aircraft testing flights, reached 1.3 thousand, which was 0.5 percent of all the flights attended to in the Lithuanian airspace.
Aircraft of “Boeing 738” model were the most frequent users of airspace, since they executed 2.9 thousand of flights or 2 percent more than during the same period in 2018. The flights of the aircraft of this model comprised 15 percent of all the flights of the airlines using Lithuanian airspace.
Last year aircraft of “Airbus A320” model was used for 2.8 thousand of flights or 0.03 percent less than during the same period in 2018. The flights of the aircraft of this model comprised 14.8 percent of all the flights executed by all the airlines.
In 2019 aircraft of “Airbus A321” model was used for 2.2 thousand of flights or 6.3 percent more than during the same period in 2018. The flights of aircraft of this type comprised 11.4 percent of all the flights of the airlines executed using aircraft of various models.
Last year aircraft of “Airbus A319” model was used for 1.2 thousand flights or 12.8 percent less than during the same period in 2018. This number comprised 6 percent of all the flights of the airlines executed using aircraft of various models.
Aircraft of “Bombardier” model is the last one on the top five of most popular aircraft models using Lithuanian airspace. The aircraft of this model were used for 1.1 thousand of flights or 43.9 percent more than during the same period of the previous year. This number comprised 5.5 percent of all the flights executed by the airlines using aircraft of various models in Lithuanian airspace.
State enterprise “Oro navigacija” is the controller of Lithuanian airspace, ensuring safe and efficient provision of air navigation services. The enterprise also carries out scientific aviation innovation development projects. The enterprise provides air navigation services to aircraft flying over Lithuanian airspace, including commercial, military and general aviation aircraft, 24 hours per day and 7 days per week.
